JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH
Rust - iron oxide which results from the chemical reaction between iron, air and water - is such a wonderful subject for abstract photography. The textures, patterns and colours it produces are incredibly varied, depending on the material and shape of the subject it appears on and it can produce fascinating details which seem to become alive when seen under the right light.
If you are interested in knowing how I work, this series 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' provides an insight into how my images evolve when photographing a particular subject. Sometimes this "evolution" can stretch over a long period of time but in this instance it all happened during a visit to a garden centre. Needless to say that nothing was planned, it just happened that there were several rusty fire pits for sale, the vivid colours shining brightly in the afternoon sun. I took some close-up shots with the phone (ignoring the bemused looks from the other shoppers ;-)), then moved on to creating multiple exposures using different blend modes. The patterns and colours remind me of magma being catapulted from the core of the earth to it's surface, then gradually settling to form new landscapes.
